- Chapter 2: A Quick Setup For Those Who
- Don't Like to Read Manuals
-
-
-
- 2.1 Understanding The System
-
- 4D-BBS can be broken down into 6 different sections. Each section has
- a directory or multiple directories that coincide with the section. These
- different sections are:
-
- System Files Directory
- * Text Files Directory
- Menus Directory
- * Users Directory
-
- * Message Bases Directory Boards:
- * File Transfers Directory File:
-
- * Doors Main Directory
-
-
- Note: As of V2.0 the "Mail:" directory is no longer needed or used,
- and the mail is by default stored in message base 0. Directories marked
- with an "*" indicate multiple sub-directories can exist within this
- directory. "File:" and "Boards:" were retained from V1.65 for
- compatibility reasons and are not directly used by 4D-BBS. They are the
- default root paths in the file catalog editor and the message base editor.
- (Refer to chapters 4 - 7 for more information on an individual directory.)
-
- Each of the above directories contain specific data files for that
- section. In most cases, 4D-BBS will not run if the first 4 directories and
- appropriate data files are not found.
-
-
- 2.2 Quick Installation
-
- 4D-BBS uses the Commodore Installer program to simplify installation.
- This program is not packaged with 4D-BBS, but is freely distributable and
- can be obtained from CornerStone Software's Support BBS is you do not have
- it or can not find it.
-
- Insert the 4D-BBS Install diskette, and double-click on its disk icon.
- There should be an icon called "4D-BBS Install" in the root directory of
- the diskette. Double-click this icon to start installation. (If your
- installer program is not in your Workbench's path, then you need to to
- select the icon, and under the Workbench "Icons" pull doen menu select
- information. Click in the box next to "Default Tool:" and put the full
- path of where the Installer program is and then select Save.)
-
- The first window which comes up asks you which installation mode you
- would like to use. It is recommended you choose "Expert User" so you will
- have to confirm all actions of the installation.
-
- After selecting "Proceed with Install", the next window you will see
- if the Installation options window. This window allows you to select
- whether you want to install for real, and what logging actions you would
- prefer. Once you have selected your choices, click on "Proceed" to
- continue.
-
- Now comes the first 4D-BBS specific choice. The next window asks you
- "Select where to creates 4D-BBS' main directory:". You should select the
- path where you wish the root "4D-BBS" directory to be created. Normally
- this will be a device (i.e. "Work:"). Select "Proceed" when you have
- choosen your path.
-
- The next three windows ask you where to create the directories to
- store the message files, files for transfers, and the doors/games
- directories. The installer will make a suggestion for each, and you can
- accept this by simply hitting return. If you wish to change the directory,
- click in the box under "Selected Directory" and type the name, or use the
- list selector above it. The default setup assumes "File:", "Boards:" and
- "Doors:" have been assigned to the directories which you select. You
- should change these default settings with the FCL_ed and MB_ed editors.
-
- Once you select "Proceed" after the third window, the installer will
- copy the necessary files from the Distribution floppy to the selected
- destinations directories. Next the installer will prompt you to whether
- you have a high speed modem or not. It is neccesary for the installer to
- know this inorder to create the correct startup script for the BBS. If you
- have a high speed modem and wish to lock the serial port, select "Yes",
- otherwise select "No". If you select Yes, you will be prompted at which
- baud rate you want to lock the serial port at. Select the baud rate from
- the list, and select "Proceed".
-
- Next, the installer will run the Configuration editor to allow you to
- start customizing the BBS. Please consult Chapter 4 for detailed
- information about the configuration editor.
-
- Once you have exited from the configuration editor, you will be
- prompted to whether or not you would like to run the other editors to
- finish customizing other parts of the BBS. You do not have to run these
- editors at this time, but will need to go back and run them later to
- customize the BBS. Select either "Setup" or "Skip", respectively for each
- window.
-
- From here, installation is complete. The installer will display some
- information about where 4D-BBS was installed, and how to start it.
-
-
- 2.4 Where To Go From Here
-
- You will be able to load and run the BBS at this point. The default
- setup allows a user with name "SYSOP" and password "SYSOP" to log into the
- BBS. You may browse through the BBS and see the default setup. When you
- are ready to configure the BBS to your needs, continue to chapter 3.
